Cycling For Beginners is an independent guide for people starting out on a bike. We explain how to choose a first bike that fits, what gear actually matters for safety and comfort, how to ride confidently in traffic, and how to take care of a bike without a workshop.

We write for beginners, so we avoid jargon or explain it when it matters. Our guides are based on manufacturer sizing charts and specifications, published safety guidance and standards, and established training principles. When a guide is not based on our own riding or testing, we say so.

Who we write for

Our readers are adults in the United States who are new to cycling or coming back to it, including first-time bike buyers, commuters and people riding for fitness. Every guide aims to answer a real question clearly and point to the source behind any important claim.

How we work

Our articles are researched from U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission helmet standards, NHTSA bicycle safety guidance, manufacturer sizing charts and specifications, and published training and exercise guidelines. We explain how we chose and checked information in our Editorial Policy. We do not publish fake reviews, invented test results or made-up personal stories, and we do not claim to have tested a product unless the article says how it was tested.

Important

Wear a helmet that meets the U.S. CPSC bicycle helmet standard, use front and rear lights when visibility is low, and follow local traffic laws. Check brakes, tires and quick releases before every ride. If you have a health condition or are returning to exercise after a long break, talk to a doctor before starting a training plan. Our repair guides cover basic home maintenance only; take anything involving brakes or structural parts you are unsure about to a qualified bike shop.
